Transition Year (one year optional)
We offer an innovative and broad ranging course to transition year students. The course provides students with new opportunities to develop themselves socially, personally and academically. Through the Transition Year Programme, young people become independent learners. Transition Year aims to help young people for adult life, especially through contact with work places and career interests. There is a significant emphasis on confidence building, group work and leadership skills. A key part of our transition year is participation in the Bridge to College (B2C) programme. The B2C project allows students to attend Trinity College in order to create an awareness of the positives of college life, which ensures greater motivation for the Leaving Cert. It also offers an innovative third level learning experience using technology. Among varied educational experiences in TY students are given the opportunity to partake in the following:
- Work Experience
- Community Service
- Business and Enterprise
- Grooming and Deportment
- Interview Skills
- First Aid
- Horse Riding
- Cairdeas Programme
Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)
Some of our senior cycle students opt to do the follow the LCA programme. This is a hands on practical course which allows students to attain credits on an ongoing basis over a two year period. It is fully recognised and accredited by the Department of Education and Skills. Participation in this course does not preclude students from entering third level education. In fact we take pride that the majority of our LCA students receive a distinction or merit in their final examinations. The majority of LCA students have gone to Colleges of Further Education and indeed some have completed FETAC level eight in National Universities.
Leaving Certificate students are offered a wide range of subjects. Each year the list of subjects offered may alter slightly, as they are tailored where possible, to reflect the wishes of our students. Currently we offer the following subjects as Leaving Certificate level to higher level standard.
- Home Economics*
- Physical Education
- Religious Education
*Field trips, project work and practicals are a large part of this subject coursework.
Where possible international students are facilitated in taking their native language as a subject in the leaving certificate. This may also be included as CAO points for third level colleges.
